On 31 October 2008, a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto posted a nine-page paper, "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System", to a cryptography mailing list. The paper described a way for strangers to transact electronically without a trusted third party, solving the double-spend problem with proof of work and a public, timestamped ledger.
On 3 January 2009, the first block of that ledger, the genesis block, was mined, and shortly after, the first open-source client software was released. Satoshi continued to write code, post on forums and correspond with early contributors through 2009 and 2010, gradually handing off responsibility for the project.
Satoshi's last known public communications date from around December 2010, and the identity behind the name has never been verified. Various individuals have been proposed by journalists or have claimed the identity themselves, but as of today none of these claims has been substantiated with cryptographic proof, such as a signature from keys known to be Satoshi's early on. What remains certain is the code, the writings and the coins mined in the earliest blocks, not who wrote them.

Despite many claims and guesses over the years, no individual has provided cryptographic proof, such as a valid signature from Satoshi's known early keys, that is publicly verifiable. The identity remains unconfirmed.[1]

Because Satoshi mined a large number of the earliest blocks and those coins have essentially never moved, it is possible to observe on-chain that a substantial, historically consistent balance associated with the earliest mining activity remains untouched. This is often cited as circumstantial evidence supporting the idea that Satoshi voluntarily stepped away rather than lost access, though it proves nothing about identity.
The pseudonymity was itself a design choice consistent with the project's goals: Bitcoin's protocol does not require trusting any person, so it was built to keep working, unmodified, whether or not its creator ever appeared again.
