Layers like Lightning extend capacity for everyday payments by settling many transactions off-chain, but base-layer space itself remains scarce, and fees rise during periods of high demand.

User experience and irreversibility: sending to a mistyped address, losing a seed phrase, or falling for a scam typically cannot be reversed by any customer service line, unlike many card or bank transactions that carry fraud protections and chargebacks. This unforgiving design is also part of what makes Bitcoin resistant to arbitrary reversal by third parties, but it places real responsibility, and real risk of unrecoverable loss, on the user.

Energy use: Bitcoin mining consumes a meaningful amount of electricity because proof of work intentionally requires real-world costs to secure the network, and this remains a genuinely contested topic, critics point to environmental impact and opportunity cost of that electricity, while defenders point to increasing use of stranded, flared or renewable energy sources and compare the spend against other large industries. Reasonable, well-informed people disagree here, and the honest position is to present both sides rather than assert a settled verdict.
